Michigan City’s ninth annual Great Lakes Grand Prix kicked off Thursday at 100 Washington Restaurant with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and opportunity to meet the stars of the weekend event. The three-day event will feature offshore speedboats racing at Washington Park Beach and several side events including a vintage car show and silent auction.
The Race Village will open to the public Friday — giving attendees the chance to see the boats up-close — along with the beer garden and various food and merchandise vendors. Friday will also feature a VIP party to meet the racers at Washington Park.
Washington Park will host live music from 8 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with Point’n Fingers Band performing the first night and Fragile Soul Band playing the following night.
Free shuttles will be available from the Grand Prix to the downtown Taste of Michigan City, which runs Friday and Saturday. The Taste will have several food vendors ranging from Lulu’s Licks with tacos and empanadas to Roberto’s Pizzeria.
Saturday will host multiple attractions leading up to the big race day, including a free vintage car show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. sponsored by Four A’s Car Club and a super boat parade at the Taste of Michigan City at 6 p.m.
The weekend will come to a close with the anticipated race day Sunday. The first race of speedboats will begin at 11 a.m. and the second race is set for 1 p.m. After, Blue Chip Casino Hotel & Spa will host the awards banquet from 5 to 7 p.m.
