KEY WEST, Fla. (November 12, 2011) – Super Boat International announced that veteran offshore powerboat racer Joey Gratton died from injuries sustained during the 31st annual Key West World Championships. The accident occurred in the final laps of Friday’s powerboat event. Both racers were transported to Lower Keys Medical Center. Owner and driver, Stephen Page is in good condition. Gratton, a veteran throttleman of offshore racing will be greatly missed. Our prayers are with the entire Gratton family and racing community.

It is regrettable, the loss of three powerboat racers, that in an age where the technology and expertise exist to address the short comings of cockpit development in these raceboats. My hope is that the offshore groups seek out the experts to develop cockpit systems that could make this the last event that there is a loss of live.

This has truly been a sad week in Key West. These men lost their lives in a sport that they have loved, God Bless to all the families and may they honor their loved ones with great memories and laughter.
