It’s Crystal Clear… Super Boats Heading to Crystal Coast This Weekend
Offshore Race Teams Preparing for 5th Annual Event in Morehead City, NC
Key West, (September 14, 2010) – Super Boat International Professional Offshore powerboat race teams will converge on Morehead City, North Carolina this weekend for the 5th annual Crystal Coast Super Boat Grand Prix. This event is like NASCAR’s last race before the Chase. Teams will compete and work to earn the most points before going into next month’s Super Boat National Championship event.
While this could be a make or break weekend for some teams, one team is looking to have another solid run and hold a commanding lead in the Super Vee Unlimited points race. Throttleman, Peter Meyer of Instigator Motorsports, comments, “ We want to take the same approach we did at the last race. We want to run a smart race and put ourselves in position to do well in Morehead. Scorpion Engines does a great job for us and we’ve been very fortunate with our success this year.”
John Carbonell, President of Super Boat International comments on the importance of a good race here. “Teams running in a close points race want to do well here. It’s about keeping your equipment running and running well and it’s about finishing the race. That may not sound like a lot, but when you’re out there banging these race boats around, you want to make sure you finish the race and finish at the top. This is a great race site and venue that will test drivers with left and right turns. We have some good long runs here to the outside buoys and a team can really do well by making great turns.”
Teams race the 5-1/2 mile course in the Morehead City Port area. Last year’s race excited fans as the teams raced along the bulkhead bleachers. Most teams enjoy the convience of this race site as the boats are parked down on the waterfront making it a short drive to the cranes. Teams have easy access to test and, then can crane their boats right away returning them to the dry pits for the evening parties. Fans can watch the teams prepare or repair their boats for Sunday’s race. Local organizers and volunteers do a great job of getting the beautiful coastal community ready for the Super Boat event.
Boats start arriving Friday (17th) and will stage in Race Village, (Across from Jack’s Water front bar) where fans can see their favorite teams up close. After the early morning drivers meeting, race teams will test on Saturday from 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm. Teams will race and compete in their select classes on Sunday with the first race scheduled for 12:00 pm and the second starting at 2:00 pm. Super Boats vary in sizes up to 50’ feet in length and can reach speeds in calm water races in excess of 200 mph.
