20th Annual Super Boat Race Ready For New York City
Key West, (September 7, 2010) – This weekend is the running of The 20th Annual New York Super Boat Grand Prix on the Hudson River, between New Jersey and New York City. Super Boats are set to compete in the coveted New York boat race during this very memorable weekend. SBI teams raced up and down the river on September 9th of that 2001 weekend and some of the last footage of the twin towers was forever captured with the onboard boat cameras. Super Boat International (SBI), working very closely with State and National agencies, closes the Hudson River down for the famed race, while also paying respect to the Nine Eleven tragedy.
SBI, the only racing organization that shuts down the Hudson River, likes running this New York event for its proximity to major populations and is proud to say this race has been held the same weekend for 20 years.
There is something spectacular about bringing the thrill of offshore boat racing to the largest metropolitan city in the U.S. and racing on the Hudson River. John Carbonell, founder of Super Boat International, enjoys the nostalgia and excitement the New York race brings. “I’ve always enjoyed coming here to New York and producing a race right next to the Statue of Liberty. It makes for such an awesome site. Normally, we are running in the ocean along the beach… but here, to see Lady Liberty when we’re racing around the course, is something we don’t get to see every day,” comments Carbonell. “With the tragedy of Nine Eleven in our hearts… the states of New York and New Jersey wanted to continue the Grand Prix race in early September in an effort to encourage people to enjoy spending time with family and friends.”
Peter Meyer, owner of Team Instigator, a New York resident comments, “I really like this race. I travel all over the U.S. racing boats and to be able to come home and do a little racing in my backyard is great. It’s much easier for my family and friends to come down and see the race. People can watch it from the Jersey or New York side of the river. Racing up the river and actually seeing people on their balconies or in their windows watching the race is great. Fans hear the rumble of the powerful boats and come from everywhere to see what’s happening.”
New York is the 4th state in the U.S. where Super Boats have competed this season. Teams are eager to make the trip to the New York area and stage their boats around the 124 year-old Statue of Liberty.
Boats arrive Friday (10th) and will stage in Race Village, at Liberty Landing Marina. Fans are encouraged to come see their favorite teams. Testing will be “rules of the road” Saturday (11th) after the Nine Eleven Services until 5:00 pm. On Sunday (12th), all teams will compete at 12:00 p.m. for the 20th Annual Super Boat Grand Prix. Super Boats vary in sizes up to 50’ feet in length and can reach speeds in calm water races in excess of 200 mph.
Super Boat is the premier sanctioning body of offshore powerboat racing. The Super Boat International season runs April through November with 8 events making up the National Championship title series followed by the final (9th) race of the season, the 30th Annual Key West World Championships. National races take place in Miami, FL; Biloxi, MS; Sarasota, FL; Michigan City, IN; Cocoa Beach, FL; New York, NY; Morehead City, NC; and the series championship event will be held in Clearwater Beach, FL. These 9 scheduled events for the 2010 racing season enables Super Boat International to claim the largest and the best schedule of offshore Super Boat racing around the world.
