Instigator Motorsports Betters Kilo Record 124.52 MPH
Sarasota, FL (July 2, 2010) – The Sarasota Super Boat Kilo World Speed Record Event was held today with, record holder, Instigator Motorsports bettering their standing record with a run of 124.52 miles per hour. Owner, Peter Meyer, set out to better his previous speed of 120.698 set in Sarasota this time last year. “I’m real happy with our runs today. We made 3 runs (6 passes) and we improved our record on each run. The conditions were pretty good. We had calm waters and cooler temperatures this morning and it really helped the motors. We came in after the second run, changed props and set an even higher number,” commented Meyer.
However, today’s event was not so kind to the entries of the Al Copeland Jr’s boat, Phenomenon, and the other Louisiana Super Boat entry, Popeye’s. The Phenomenon is a new entry this year… looking to beat the work speed propeller record of 221 mph. During testing on Thursday, the team experienced a problem with one of the turbines and had to shut the engines down. After numerous test passes, it looked like the team was ready to set a new record, but with unfortunate mechanical problems, the team was forced to scratch today’s event. The team was able to collect the boat and participate in the Suncoast Offshore Parade. The team will work during the weekend and attempt to participate in Sunday’s Suncoast Offshore Grand Prix.
Popeye’s, the entry owned by Stan Ware and driven by Lisa Matthews, entered the racecourse and after warming up the motors, the team experienced a blown water hose. The team was not without earlier troubles. After idling out in low waters, the team ingested something into the starboard engine and had to return to the docks for minor repairs.
The Superboat Kilo event was very successful, in that a new Super Vee Unlimited record was set. The weekend’s activities continue with testing Saturday July 3rd and racing scheduled for Sunday July 4th. Sunday, July 4th starts are currently scheduled for 11:00 am and 1:00 pm off Lido Beach.
