OSS/SBI BILOXI SMOKIN’ THE SOUND REPORT
Biloxi, MS. May 25, 2010: It was an incredible weekend of racing and camaraderie when the Offshore Super Series and SuperBoat International teams raced the Mississippi Gulf Coast at the Smokin’ The Sound’s 6th annual offshore powerboat race.
Sun and heat factored into the calm water testing and racing with Pro Am classes taking to the race course for heat racing Saturday and Sunday. Team Unleashed with Shannon Penn and Vincent Simon spun out on Saturday with the outdrives ripped out; both driver and throttleman were checked out and released by OSS Med/Safety Director David DiPetrillo and the Biloxi Regional Hospital staff.
Discovery Channel Deadliest Catch deckhand and The Wizard star, Travis Loflond and veteran offshore driver Bob Mazikowski ran a strong race heat Saturday but had engine problems on Sunday. Travis said ” Wow, what an incredible experience to go from the cold high seas of crabbing to a powerboat screaming at 91 MPH on the Sound’s challenging course”.
Race producer Woody Bailey welcomed twenty eight teams to the OSS season opener. Bailey said “Our Gulf Coast hosted the best of the best in offshore racing with the casino resorts and area restaurants featuring the finest accommodations and cuisine”. The Sunday night awards ceremony featured the annual Randy Linebach Lighthouse award for sportsmanship; George Auriemma Jr. of Team Imco was the 2010 recipient voted on by all the OSS teams. Team Typhoon’s Jim Natoli was given a Forever 24 checkered flag by OSS Board Chairman and Race Control Director Mike Mares, as he became an honorary member of the Linebach family’s Team Airborne.
