SBI Opens Season in Miami – Powerboat Magazine
It’s time again to open the Super Boat International (SBI) race season and Miami is ready! A three-day celebration of the world’s fastest and most recognized race boats, the Miami Super Boat Grand Prix kicks off on Friday (April 16) and runs through Sunday (April 18).
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Miami Grand Prix, which has become a tradition to open the season because of the cooler than summer temperatures. Boats will arrive in Bicentennial Park on Friday, giving eager fans the opportunity to catch a glimpse of their favorite drivers and boats up close. On Saturday, the event will gain some speed as teams begin testing in the afternoon.
The main event is scheduled for Sunday when the various classes will race along a 6.5-mile stretch of Miami’s infamous South Beach. Boats range in size but can be large as 50 feet in length and reach speeds above 200 mph.
The Miami Grand Prix is the first of 10 events that make up the 2010 SBI season, which culminates in November with the 30th annual Key West World Championships (Nov. 7-14) in Key West, Fla.
